COMM101 - ORAL COMMUNICATION - 3 credits

This course aims to improve the effectiveness and fluency of the students' oral communication skills in a variety of settings. Emphasis is on listening and public speaking with attention to organizational and delivery skills.

COMM102 - FUNDAMENTAL COMPUTER SKILLS - 2 credits

This course introduces students to fundamental concepts and operations necessary to use computers. Students will learn to use word processing software to create, enhance, and format documents. Students will learn how to display and present visual information in various formats. Search engines and networking sites will also be introduced.

COMM201 - INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS - 3 credits

This course introduces students to the theories and principles of communications with emphasis on the types of communication (interpersonal, intercultural, mass communication, and organizational), the contexts in which communication occurs, and the issues that are faced therein.

COMM202 - INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC RELATIONS - 3 credits

This course introduces students to the industry of Public Relations (PR) and the role it plays in reputation, relationship management and corporate strategy. There will be emphasis on PR and ethics, PR planning and strategy, critical analysis and application of relevant communications theories.

COMM301 - DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS - 3 credits

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to basic principles and techniques of digital communications and editing. Students will learn about the history of digital communications and how to plan and use digital media tools effectively and to edit digital content for communication purposes taking into account the variation in target audience.

COMM302 - CULTURE MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS - 3 credits

This course will explore the concepts of and shifts in culture, media and communications in a global setting. It aims to enhance student knowledge and ability to critically analyze and interpret the discourse of different media channels, outlets and the impact this plays on the state and public sphere.

This course will introduce students to theories, systems, structures and processes of professional and organizational communication. Students will learn about organizational behaviour, ethics, culture and the dynamics of global communications.

COMM322 - ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS - 3 credits

This course builds on the students' knowledge of public relations. Students will critically examine the evolving media landscape and the various channels that are utilized (including traditional media, digital media, and social media). Emphasis will be placed on the development of strategic social media engagement strategies through case studies and projects.

COMM323 - GENDER AND COMMUNICATIONS - 3 credits

This course will examine the relationship and influence that communication has upon gender and the influence that gender has in shaping communication interactions. The course will introduce and use multiple theoretical perspectives and address a variety of social issues.

COMM401 - CREATIVE COMMUNICATIONS & CAMPAIGNS - 3 credits

This course offers an overview of creative communications and related research. It exposes students to the power of social media and campaigns. This course examines the influence of culture on the communication process. It aims to increase students' awareness of and appreciation for the complexity of intercultural communication. The course will cover several general topics including identity, perception, communication skills, culture, linguistic differences, globalization and nonverbal communication.

COMM405 - LITERATURE, DOCUMENTARIES AND FILM - 3 credits

"This course will focus on examining the interplay between literature and film through specific literary texts and their cinematic adaptations. The course will focus on a specific theme that will be chosen each time it is offered. Students will be expected to read the relevant literary texts and respond critically to their cinematic counterparts through research, group work, and examinations. COMM406 - COMMUNICATING A STRUGGLE - 3 credits

"The course will explore how the cinematic arts (movies, documentaries, series, etc.) operate as a medium of communication through the close study of current and historical conflicts. The course will pay specific attention to how cinematic works reflect the formation and evolution of a national identity and the representation of the Other. Students will be expected to critically engage with several fiction and non-fiction films by local and international directors.

ENGL205 - ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS - 3 credits

This course aims to improve the effectiveness and fluency of the students' oral communication skills in a variety of settings. Students engage in a number of activities such as role-plays, dialogues, group discussions, interviews, and informative and persuasive speeches.

ENGL213 - ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS III - 3 credits

This course in English for Specific Purposes is the third university requirement. It aims to provide non-major students with additional opportunities to improve and apply the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and sub-skills that were introduced in ENGL 120 and ENGL 121 and are necessary for the students' chosen major. It also focuses on the study skills, critical thinking skills, and vocabulary building skills necessary for success in an academic setting using materials from the student's field of study.

ENGL214 - PROSE FICTION - 3 credits

This course aims to equip students with the tools they need to engage in the critical/analytical reading and interpretation of fiction. Emphasis is on an in depth analysis, and interpretation of individual short stories and novels. The course highlights the cultural, historical, religious context of the selected works, and elements of fiction. The course introduces two critical schools to help students interpret the readings.

This course aims to introduce students to the study of drama. It covers a range of time periods and various movements and genres. The course focuses on the structural elements of plot, character, thought, and verbal style in selected plays from the classical periods to the present.

This course aims to introduce students to poetry as a literary genre. It also aims to foster in students a critical understanding and appreciation of the poetic arts as well as a broad knowledge of the characteristics of the poetry of various literary periods.

This course aims to improve students' critical reading ability by developing the skills required for reading at university level. It also aims to provide practice in a variety of reading sub-skills and strategies.

This course aims to hone the research skills students need to write empirical studies in the field. It introduces students to the ways research on language-related topics is conceived and conducted. This course focuses on English as the target language. It involves a contrastive study of Arabic and English phonological, morphological and syntactic structures.

ENGL305 - SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION - 3 credits

This course aims to provide students with an overview of the most recent theories that account for the ability of human beings to acquire and learn their L1 and L2. It also explores individual differences that affect language learning.

ENGL307 - ERROR ANALYSIS - 3 credits

This course aims to introduce students to the concept and procedures of Error Analysis and to raise their awareness of grammatical correctness. The students will utilize their knowledge of English grammar to identify, reconstruct, and explain the performance errors of Arab learners of English as a foreign language.

This course aims to give students an appreciation of the relationship between language and society and language and culture. It also aims to expose students to a variety of topics dealing with the general theme of language in its social context.

ENGL313 - THE NOVEL - 3 credits

This course aims to focus on reading analytically, critically, and thoroughly novels by pre-modern, modern, and contemporary authors. It exposes students to the variety of modes, traditions, conventions of the novel and its sub-genres.

ENGL320 - LITERATURE OF THE ROMANTIC PERIOD - 3 credits

This course aims to expose students to a detailed study of the major pre-Romantic and Romantic poets, novelists and essayists, from 1775 to 1824. It focuses on the different trends, elements and influences that characterize the period.

This course aims to develop skills for recreating an author's experience recorded in a literary piece and for communicating that experience to an audience through oral reading. This course aims to examine literature by and about women, including poetry, essays, novellas and novels. Readings include twentieth-century literature by celebrated Arab, European, and American women writers. It uses feminist literary theories, including feminist psychoanalytic theory, feminist stylistics, and minority women's theory.

ENGL333 - THE HOLY LAND IN TRAVEL WRITINGS - 3 credits

This course aims to examine a variety of Western Literature of Travel in the Holy Land, with emphasis on the writings of the 19th century. Readings include voyages of discovery and self-discovery, confrontations with the 'other', as well as the Westerner's perspective and impressions of Palestine and Palestinian history, religious practices, environment, dress codes and culture.

ENGL334 - PALESTINIAN LITERATURE - 3 credits

This course aims to introduce students to the riches of Palestinian literature and to acquaint them with the critical responses it receives in the Arab World and beyond. It discusses the historical, political, cultural, and religious influences that helped shape the various trends in Palestinian literature written by Palestinian authors in their homeland and in exile. The course covers selections from different genres originally written in English or in an authorized English translation.

ENGL335 - INDIVIDUAL AUTHOR - 3 credits

This course aims to focus on selected works of a single author. Students will concentrate on reading, interpreting, and analyzing the author's selected works and relating them to his/her life and times and critical traditions around him/her. A different author is selected each semester, with a balance between renowned British, American and other world writers, novelists, poets, and playwrights.

This course aims to investigate the cultural and political contexts of modern and post-modern literature, and the two major literary movements of modernism and post-modernism. Selected English literary works and texts of world literature in authentic English translation are closely discussed.

The Creative Writing course is designed to hone the creative potential of Bethlehem University's students of English Literature. The course is geared towards the analysis of various works of fiction with a specific focus on writing style, world-building, description, and plot progression. Students will be expected to utilize the skills they have learned in order to craft their own creative work and offer feedback to their peers during workshops.

This course is the second level of remedial English that is offered to students who show minimum language proficiency level on the English Entrance Exam. This course is offered for freshmen students in two parts. The first part aims to introduce students to the effective use of traditional and modern sources of information housed in the University Library. The second part introduces the students to university life and the Lasallian mission of the university.
